Orchard Park, NY (Sports Network) - The Buffalo Bills re-signed quarterback Tarvaris Jackson on Friday and the former starter with Minnesota and Seattle could challenge Ryan Fitzpatrick for the top job this summer.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Jackson, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks last August for an undisclosed draft pick, did not see action in 2012 as Fitzpatrick's backup.

That could change next year under new head coach Doug Marrone.

"I spoke with Ryan (Fitzpatrick) and Tarvaris (Jackson) and told them we will have an open competition at the quarterback position -- similar to what we will do at all positions on our team heading into our offseason work," said Marrone. "I believe that our players will embrace this challenge. We are looking forward to working with our players as we prepare for the 2013 season."

Jackson has started 34-of-51 career games and has totaled 7,075 yards on 59.4 percent passing with 38 touchdowns and 35 interceptions. He spent his first five NFL seasons with Minnesota, starting 12 games in 2007, before moving on to Seattle in 2011 and starting 14 games for the Seahawks.

The eighth-year pro also has 643 yards and five scores on 159 rushes.
