Florham Park, NJ (Sports Network) - On Thursday, the same day the Jets introduced new general manager John Idzik, New York officially named Marty Mornhinweg offensive coordinator, while also announcing the promotion of Dennis Thurman to defensive coordinator.

For the previous 10 seasons, Mornhinweg had been an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, spending the last seven as their offensive coordinator. In New York, he will replace Tony Sparano, who was ousted after one season at the position with the Jets.

Over the course of his career, Mornhinweg has helped five quarterbacks earn Pro Bowl honors, including Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb, Brett Favre, Steve Young and Jeff Garcia.

Mornhinweg will have plenty of work to do with the Jets, as he takes over an offense which placed 30th in the league in total yards, scored 10 or fewer offensive points in eight games and finished with the fifth fewest points overall during the 2012 season.

Prior to catching on with the Eagles in 2003, Mornhinweg spent two seasons as the head coach of the Detroit Lions. He entered the NFL in 1995 with the Green Bay Packers before spending four seasons as the offensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers from 1997-2000.

Thurman takes over the defensive coordinator responsibilities for Mike Pettine, who left New York to take the same position with the Buffalo Bills.

Formerly the Jets' defensive backs coach, Thurman has been with New York since Rex Ryan was hired as head coach in 2009.
