Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - The Carolina Panthers named Dave Gettleman as the team's new general manager on Wednesday.

He'll take over for interim GM Brandon Beane, who served in that role after Marty Hurney was axed in October.

Gettleman, who started his career as a scouting department intern for the Buffalo Bills in 1986, comes to Carolina from the New York Giants, where he was the senior pro personnel analyst last season prior to spending the previous 13 years as the club's director of pro personnel.

"I was very impressed with Dave's experience and think he will be a very good fit for our organization," Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said. "He has an extensive background in personnel and comes from an organization in the New York Giants that I hold in high regard and played an instrumental role in their success."

The 61-year-old Gettleman has had a hand with six Super Bowl teams, including three wins - two with the Giants (2007 and 2011) and one with the Broncos (1997). He was also with Buffalo during its Super Bowl run from 1990-91.

"I am honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to work in the Panthers organization," Gettleman said. "It is similar to the Giants organization in which I have had the privilege of working the last 15 years and has a lot of pieces in place for success. I am excited about getting started."

Carolina finishes 7-9 in 2012 and failed to gain a playoff berth for the fourth consecutive season.
