(SportsNetwork.com) - New York Giants running back David Wilson will miss the 2014 season due to a neck injury and his career could be over, according to multiple reports.

Wilson left practice last Tuesday with a burner and was sent to a hospital for tests on his surgically repaired neck. He sat out the remainder of last week's practices and Sunday night's preseason game.

Wilson, 23, announced July 21 that he was cleared to practice after undergoing neck surgery in January to fuse vertebrae and repair a herniated disk. The former first-round pick was hurt in a Week 5 loss to Philadelphia last season.

On Monday morning Wilson met with spine specialist Dr. Frank Cammisa, who performed the surgery on Wilson in January and it was determined that Wilson should not play this season, according to the reports.

In two seasons with the Giants, Wilson has rushed for 504 yards and five touchdowns over 21 games -- including six starts. The Virginia Tech product has also caught six passes for 42 yards and a score.

The Giants will rely on veteran free-agent acquisition Rashad Jennings and rookie Andre Williams if Wilson can't play.
