New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers has been suspended three games without pay for an illegal check to the head of New Jersey Devils forward Dainius Zubrus during a Jan. 4 matchup in Buffalo.

The incident occurred at 7:02 of the third period when Myers caught Zubrus up high just as the New Jersey forward entered the Buffalo zone. Myers was assessed a minor penalty for an illegal check to the head on the play.

"Myers unnecessarily extends upward and launches himself into Zubrus' head, making it the main point of contact," said Brendan Shanahan, head of the league's department of player safety.

It's the second time over his five-year career that Myers has been suspended. The 23-year-old blueliner was banned three games on Mar. 13, 2012 for boarding Montreal forward Scott Gomez.

Myers will forfeit $84,615.39 for the infraction, with the money going to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. He is not eligible to return until Jan. 14, when the Sabres host the Philadelphia Flyers.
