Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Buffalo Sabres named Tim Murray general manager on Thursday.

Murray takes over for Darcy Regier, who was fired in November along with head coach Ron Rolston after a 4-15-1 start. Owner Terry Pegula brought in Pat LaFontaine at the time to serve as president of hockey operations.

"I wanted to find the right fit for this organization," said LaFontaine at a Thursday news conference.

Murray is the first full-time hire for LaFontaine, who named Ted Nolan interim head coach in November. Since then, the Sabres are 8-11-3 and 12-26-4 overall entering Thursday's action.

"I'm excited to be in Buffalo, where you strap on your boots, strap on your skates and work hard," said Murray. "It's about detail. I see a lot of good people in the organization. I think great things can happen here."

Murray had been the assistant general manager with the Ottawa Senators since July 2007. Prior to that, he was the assistant director of player personnel for the New York Rangers for two years when he was responsible for scouting the amateur ranks and evaluating potential free agents.

His NHL experience began in 1993-94 when he served as an amateur scout with the Detroit Red Wings. He joined the Florida Panthers in 1994, where his scouting career evolved until his departure as the club's director of amateur scouting in 2002. He then served as director of player personnel, responsible for overseeing the amateur draft and college free agents, with the Anaheim Ducks from 2002-03 to 2004-05.

Murray's uncle is Senators GM Bryan Murray.

In addition, the Sabres named NHL veteran Craig Patrick as special assistant to the hockey department. Patrick was formerly a general manager with the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers.

"I've had many rebuilds in my career, I was a GM for 23 years, rebuilt a lot of teams, this is going to be fun," noted Patrick.

Patrick built a pair of Stanley Cup winners with the Penguins and was also GM of the 2002 U.S. Olympic hockey team that won a silver medal at the Salt Lake City Games.
