Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - The Calgary Flames shipped veteran winger Alex Tanguay back to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday in a four-player transaction.

Heading to the Flames will be forward David Jones and defenseman Shane O'Brien, while defenseman Cory Sarich will accompany Tanguay to Denver.

"This trade adds needed size up front and grit on the back end while also allowing us to get younger," said Flames general manager Jay Feaster. "We like the fact that Jones plays a north-south game, drives hard to the net, kills penalties and is a right hand shot. O'Brien is a hard guy to play against, knows how to get under the skin of the opposition and stands up for his teammates. We are pleased to add both of these players to our organization."

Jones was limited to 33 games this past season, during which he totaled just three goals and nine points with a minus-11 rating.

O'Brien produced only four assists and 60 penalty minutes in 28 regular-season appearances for the Avs.

Meanwhile, Tanguay completed his 13th NHL season with 11 goals and 27 points in 40 games, in the third season of his second stint for Calgary. The 33-year- old native of Quebec returns to the club which selected him 12th overall in the 1998 draft having racked up career totals of 249 goals and 762 points over 922 contests.

Sarich, a stay-at-home defender, notched two assists in 28 games for the Flames last season.
