Sunrise, FL ( - The Florida Panthers announced Saturday that Gerard Gallant has been named the club's new head coach.

Gallant replaces interim head coach Peter Horachek, who was fired in April.

Horachek took over behind the bench last November after Kevin Dineen was fired following a 3-9-4 start. He guided the Panthers to a mark of 26-36-4 over the final 66 games and the club finished only ahead of Buffalo in the Eastern Conference.

Gallant spent the last two years serving as an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens, after coaching the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL.

During his three seasons with Saint John, he compiled a 159-34-9 record and led the Sea Dogs to three first-place finishes, three league final appearances, two QMJHL championships (2011 & 2012) and one Memorial Cup (2011).

Prior to joining the Sea Dogs, Gallant had stints with the Columbus Blue Jackets and the New York Islanders. He served as head coach of Columbus for parts of three seasons (2003-2004 & 2005-2007).

Gallant played in 615 NHL games as a member of the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning, registering 211 goals and 269 assists to go along with 1,674 penalty minutes.
