Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price will miss the remainder of the Eastern Conference finals against the New York Rangers.

Price sat out the third period of Game 1 on Saturday after yielding four goals in the 7-2 setback, and it was uncertain if it was because of injury or poor play.

Rangers forward Chris Kreider crashed into Price feet-first during the second period, but the netminder played the remainder of the stanza before being pulled.

Canadiens coach Michel Therrien made the announcement on Monday before Game 2.

"Carey Price will not be available tonight, nor for the rest of that series," Therrien said. "We've lost our best player, but our group has faced a lot of adversity this season."

Price has a 2.35 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage in 12 games this postseason. Therrien indicated Price could return if the Canadiens reach the Stanley Cup Finals.

Peter Budaj took over for Price in the third period Saturday and surrendered three goals on just eight shots in his first playoff action this spring.

Therrien called Kreider's play "reckless" and said it's not the first time he's crashed into goaltenders.

As to whether Budaj or Dustin Tokarski will start, Therrien said he knows who will play but wouldn't reveal his decision.

"I already know my decision," said Therrien. "You'll see tonight."

Budaj was 2-4-1 with a 3.51 GAA and .868 save percentage in seven games after the Olympics while Price was recovering from a lower-body injury he sustained in Sochi.

Tokarski appeared in three games for the Canadiens this season, earning two wins without a loss and posting a 1.84 GAA with a .946 save percentage. He also won the 2012 Calder Cup in the AHL with Tampa Bay's minor league affiliate in Norfolk, posting a 1.46 GAA and .944 save percentage.
