Recap: Calgary vs. Anaheim

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Ryan Getzlaf scored twice, including the eventual game-winner in the third period, to lead the Anaheim Ducks in a 5-4 win over the Calgary Flames on Monday.

Daniel Winnik had two goals and an assist while Saku Koivu added a goal and two assists for the Ducks, who opened their season with a 7-3 win over Vancouver. Jonas Hiller stopped 21 shots in the win.

Curtis Glencross scored twice with an assist while Alex Tanguay posted a goal and an assist for the Flames, who took a 4-1 loss to San Jose in their opener on Sunday. Miikka Kiprusoff made just 19 saves in the loss.

With the score tied in the third, Anaheim took a 4-3 lead 4:02 in as a rush play saw Koivu fling a backhander on net from the top of the right circle that went in off the right skate of Winnik for his second of the night.

The Ducks got some insurance with 8:45 to play. From the low right side, Corey Perry threw a shot on net that sat there until Kiprusoff got a stick on it. His weak clearing attempt, though, was picked off by Getzlaf down low and he swept it in.

That goal proved fortunate as Lee Stempniak was sprung by T.J. Brodie on a break and he buried his chance to make it a one-goal game with 5:56 to play.

The Flames, though, were unable to net the equalizer even with Kiprusoff pulled late in the game for an extra attacker.

"It certainly was an ugly game as far as coaches look at it. There was a tremendous amount of mistakes," Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau said.

It took just 66 seconds for the first goal of the game as Getzlaf tipped in a Toni Lydman pass and the Ducks took a 2-0 lead at the 7:23 mark of the first period when Alex Cogliano sent a pass from behind the net to the front, where Koivu redirected it in.

Just 3 1/2 minutes later, Anaheim took a 3-0 advantage on Winnik's first of the game, but Calgary scored the next three to tie the game.

The first came at the 16:54 mark of the first on Glencross's deflection of a Dennis Wideman shot on the power play and Tanguay made it a one-goal game with 25.4 to play in the frame on a turnaround shot off a broken play in the slot.

The only goal of the second period came 1:13 in on the power play when a wrist shot by Mike Cammalleri from the right circle was tipped in by Glencross to tie the game at 3-3.

"I'm really happy with the way that we bounced back. That's one thing that I can't fault this team on," Flames head coach Bob Hartley said.
