Recap: NY Rangers vs. Ottawa

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Jakob Silfverberg's tally late in the third period was the decider, as the Ottawa Senators snapped a four-game skid with a 3-2 decision over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

Zack Smith and Patrick Wiercioch also scored for the Senators, who hadn't won since Feb. 25 against Montreal and notched their first road victory since Feb. 18 at New Jersey.

Robin Lehner recorded 33 saves for the victory.

"We needed to win, and we needed to win on the road. I thought we stepped up and showed some determination," said Senators head coach Paul MacLean. "We need to have everyone playing hard and that's what happened."

Rick Nash and Brad Richards provided offense for the Rangers, whose four-game win streak came to an end.

Henrik Lundqvist made 36 stops in defeat.

Silfverberg provided Ottawa a 3-2 edge with 4:41 remaining in regulation, corralling the rebound of an Eric Gryba shot and lifting it under the crossbar from the right side.

New York went for the extra skater with just over one minute to play to no avail.

"I thought the first half of the period we were really good and then we turned it over in the middle of the period and never really regrouped from it," said Rangers head coach John Tortorella. "I don't think we defended that well in that part of the game and they scored."

Smith struck at 6:18 of the first period, accidentally redirecting a Sergei Gonchar point drive in the slot, and seeing the bouncing puck roll by Lundqvist.

Wiercicoch doubled the visitors' edge at 10:50 on the power play, but Nash countered only 13 seconds later.

Richards, back after a two-game absence after absorbing an illegal hit by Buffalo's Patrick Kaleta, tied the score with 2:21 remaining on his first goal since Jan. 26.

Lehner made nine saves and Lundqvist eight during a scoreless and placid second period.

Michael Del Zotto had a prime chance to put the hosts ahead as the clock ticked under eight minutes left, but his slapper from the right circle hit the outside of the near post.

Game Notes

The Senators have won both games against the Rangers this season, with one more meeting scheduled for Ottawa on Mar. 28 ... Gonchar finished with two assists ... Nash's tally was his first this season not scored in the third period.
