Recap: Detroit vs. Dallas

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Valtteri Filppula had two goals, Jimmy Howard stopped 25 shots and the Detroit Red Wings beat the sputtering Dallas Stars, 4-1, at Joe Louis Arena.

Henrik Zetterberg had a rare power-play marker and an assist for the Red Wings, who scored four unanswered goals after Dallas' Loui Eriksson opened the scoring midway through the second period.

Kari Lehtonen made 21 saves, some of them dazzling, in defeat.

The Stars have dropped four in a row since beating the Red Wings at the same venue last Tuesday.

With Detroit clinging to a 2-1 lead, rookie Damien Brunner and Filppula scored 23 seconds apart in the third period.

Brunner got a piece of Johan Franzen's shot, tipping it past Lehtonen. Pavel Datsyuk then fed a cross-ice pass to Filppula for a one-timer at the 6:38 mark.

"Today was a good game. Hopefully, we can build on it," Filppula said.

Eriksson lit the lamp at 10:22 of the middle stanza. Jaromir Jagr chipped the puck to Cody Eakin, fresh off the bench, and he let go a wrister on goal. Howard made the save by kicking out the right pad, but Eriksson buried the rebound.

Filppula tied the game roughly three minutes later after Datsyuk stole the puck behind the Dallas net and fed him for a quick shot from the low slot at 13:14.

Zetterberg gave the Red Wings the lead with just the club's third power-play goal of the season. He beat Lehtonen with a one-timer from atop the left circle with 24 seconds left in the period.

"Against a team like this, that's this hungry on the power play right now, you just can't take (penalties)," said Dallas head coach Glen Gulutzan.

The Stars' penalty-killing unit entered a perfect 14-for-14 on the road.

Game Notes

Dallas opened the season by playing in six straight one-goal games ... The Stars were 0-for-5 on the power play, while Detroit finished 1-for-6.
