Recap: San Jose vs. Anaheim

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Logan Couture tied the game late in regulation and Michal Handzus scored the lone shootout goal, as the undefeated San Jose Sharks extended the best start in franchise history with a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks at HP Pavilion.

Couture found the back of the net with 2:45 remaining in the third period, taking a drop pass from newcomer Scott Gomez and ripping a shot past Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller.

Handzus, the first participant in the shootout, beat Hiller over the glove.

Antti Niemi turned away the Ducks' first two shooters, Bobby Ryan and Corey Perry, before getting a little help from the crossbar on Teemu Selanne's bid.

The Sharks improved to 6-0-0 on the young season.

Joe Pavelski lit the lamp in the first period for San Jose, which mustered only 18 shots. Niemi finished with 28 saves.

"It was a frustrating night, but at least we found a way to win," said Sharks head coach Todd McLellan.

Francois Beauchemin and Matt Beleskey scored 59 seconds apart in the second period for the Ducks, who have picked up at least a point in four of their first five games (3-1-1).

Pavelski scored on a 2-on-1 with Joe Thornton at 9:46 of the opening frame.

Beauchemin pulled the Ducks even with a sharp-angle shot. The Anaheim defenseman moved down from his point position and threw a puck on net from the left corner just above the icing line that got behind Niemi.

Daniel Winnik's dogged work on the forecheck behind the San Jose net led to the go-ahead goal. Winnik stripped the puck from Sharks defenseman Marc- Edouard Vlasic and Ryan Getzlaf retrieved it in the corner before dishing to a wide-open Beleskey in the slot for a one-timer at 9:39.

Game Notes
