Recap: NY Rangers vs. Carolina

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Mired in a three-game slide, the New York Rangers were pleased to see the Carolina Hurricanes.

Rick Nash and J.T. Miller scored in the shootout, as the Rangers continued their mastery against the Hurricanes with a 2-1 win.

Henrik Lundqvist made 29 saves and turned aside both shootout attempts for the Blueshirts, who beat Carolina for the sixth straight time.

"We worked really hard and they started the game really well," Lundqvist said. "I thought we played a lot better in the second and third periods. It wasn't our best game but we found a way to win and that's what we need to do right now. I don't care how we do it as long as we get points."

The Rangers moved up to ninth in the Eastern Conference standings and are two points out of a playoff spot.

Dan Ellis finished with 35 saves in the Hurricanes' third straight loss overall. However, the point earned moved Carolina into a tie with idle Winnipeg for first place in the Southeast Division.

The Rangers had several quality chances in overtime, the best belonging to Ryan McDonagh in the extra session's opening minute. The defenseman was in alone on Ellis off a pass from Nash, but he fired the puck over the net.

Nash didn't miss to begin the shootout, using his long reach to slip a backhander past Ellis' left pad. Miller then recovered after nearly mishandling the puck to put a shot from the left side in off the far post.

The Hurricanes outshot the Rangers 14-6 in the first period and led 1-0 on a late goal by Eric Staal. Joni Pitkanen threaded a pass from the left wing to Staal in the right circle and the Carolina captain one-timed the puck past Lundqvist with 51 seconds remaining.

New York tied things up on a goal Carolina clearly thought should have been waved off.

The Hurricanes anticipated a whistle being blown following a collision in the crease. Ryan Callahan was driven into Ellis by Pitkanen after making a strong move to the net. Derek Stepan gathered the puck and fired it into a yawning cage at the 11:06 mark of the second period.

"We wanted to play for that extra point. We felt like played a pretty good game, but we weren't able to capitalize on that," Staal said.
