Recap: Calgary vs. Dallas

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Mike Cammalleri notched his fifth career hat trick and added an assist as a big first period helped Calgary take a 7-4 win over Dallas on Wednesday.

Roman Cervenka had a goal and an assist while Jay Bouwmeester, Curtis Glencross and Jiri Hudler all scored for the Flames, who snapped a two-game slide. Leland Irving gave up four goals on 34 shots in the win.

Brenden Morrow tallied two goals with Cody Eakin and Eric Nystrom also lighting the lamp for the Stars, who had a four-game winning streak stopped. Richard Bachman gave up six goals on 22 shots in the loss.

It was a good start to the game for Calgary as the team got a goal just 3:11 in when Bouwmeester was able to jam in the rebound from in front for his third of the year.

On the power play, the Flames made it a 2-0 game as Hudler finished off a nice passing play with a one-timer from the slot off a feed from Alex Tanguay at the 6:44 mark.

Skating on the power play three minutes later, Jarome Iginla sent a pass from the left boards to the right circle and Cammalleri finished it with a wrister for his first of the season.

"We weren't ready to compete. We were soft in the beginning, soft with our sticks and soft with our play," said Dallas head coach Glen Gulutzan.

Dallas finally got on the board with 7:18 to play on Nystrom's one-timer from the slot, but Calgary answered with 3:42 left in the opening frame as Cervenka potted the puck on a wrister from the slot for a 4-1 advantage.

"We wanted a good first period, we wanted to get the lead, to get back in the zone feeling good about our game, and that was the case," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley. "We were skating well, we executed well 5-on-5, we forced the Stars into a couple of infractions, and we took advantage."

Dallas made it a two-goal game just 45 seconds into the second period on the power play as Jaromir Jagr sent a pass from the deep right boards to the front where Morrow held off a defender for the re-direct into the net.

Calgary got it back less than three minutes later when Cammalleri's shot from the inside of the right circle went in, but Dallas answered 24 seconds after that as Morrow jammed it in from the crease as Irving was trying to cover up the puck.

The Flames pushed their advantage to 6-3 with 7:59 to play in the middle stanza on a rush play when Iginla sent a pass from the right circle to the low slot where Glencross got a stick on it for his fifth of the season.

The Stars again got a quick power-play goal to start the third period when Michael Ryder brought the puck around the net from the right to the left and centered it for a one-timer by Eakin just 65 seconds in.

That was as close as it got, though, as Dallas was unable to notch another goal and Cammalleri capped the hat trick on an empty-netter with 1:26 to play.
