Recap: Carolina vs. Toronto

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Dan Ellis posted 22 stops to help the Carolina Hurricanes take a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday.

Joe Corvo had a goal and an assist while Jussi Jokinen and Jordan Staal also scored for the Hurricanes, who have won three straight and five of six.

"It's tough every night out there," said Staal. "Getting two points is hard in this league and with this short season every point counts even more. We've been playing real well of late and hope to keep it going."

Nazem Kadri had the lone goal for the Maple Leafs, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Ben Scrivens gave up all three goals on 33 shots in the loss.

"It's easy sometimes to take it easy when you're on a streak and that's kind of what happened to us today," said Kadri. "It's upsetting because we know we can play better than what we showed here."

After a scoreless first period, the Hurricanes got on the board at the 6:06 mark of the second period when a loose puck in the slot came to Corvo and he snapped it in.

Toronto tied the game less than two minutes later on the power play as a slap shot by Dion Phaneuf at the left point deflected off of Kadri for his fourth of the season.

The Hurricanes, though, answered with a power-play marker of their own when a rush play into the zone saw Scrivens try to cover the puck up, but Jokinen was able to whack it in with 7:02 to play.

It was a 3-1 game just over two minutes later when a rush into the zone saw Jeff Skinner's shot stopped, but the rebound came out to the left and Staal buried it for his second of the season.

Toronto managed just five shots in the final period and was unable to break through despite pulling Scrivens with around 2 1/2 minutes to play and the 'Canes gave the home crowd a victory.
