Recap: Anaheim vs. Phoenix
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Radim Vrbata recorded his fourth career hat trick and also added an assist, as the Phoenix Coyotes ended their season on a high note with a 5-3 victory over the playoff-bound Anaheim Ducks on Saturday at Honda Center.
The game meant little for either team, as the Coyotes had already been eliminated from playoff contention while the Pacific Division champion Ducks were locked into the second seed in the Western Conference.
Kyle Chipchura and Antoine Vermette each scored once and Jason LaBarbera made 43 saves for the Coyotes, who won two of their final three games to finish 21-18-9.
"I wanted to go into the offseason feeling good about myself," LaBarbera remarked. "Last year I finished my last game and didn't play great. It stuck with me the whole summer. This will feel good to think about all summer and build off of."
Teemu Selanne, Bobby Ryan and Francois Beauchemin netted a goal apiece, while Viktor Fasth allowed four goals on 30 shots for the Ducks (30-12-6), who will host the seventh-seeded Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the playoffs.
"I wish I could've played better today and helped the team more," Fasth said. "Now we have to look forward to Tuesday. It's a new season starting. We're really excited for that."
Vrbata opened the scoring at the 8:14 mark when he buried a wrister from the right circle, but Selanne answered with a tap-in from the low right side just 2:07 later to even the score.
Chipchura slipped a quick wrister through the five-hole of Fasth with 2:24 left in the period to make it 2-1.
Beauchemin's blast from the right point 14 seconds into the second brought the Ducks even again, but Vrbata scored the next two goals to give his team the lead for good.
The first came at the 6:46 mark of the second when he pounded home a rebound from in front.
With the Coyotes down a man less than eight minutes into the third, Vrbata found the back of the net with a wrister from the left circle to make it 4-2 at the 7:43 mark.
Ryan's tip-in just under two minutes later brought the Ducks within one, but LaBarbera was able to keep the lead there before Vermette potted an empty- netter with two seconds left to account for the final margin.Game Notes
