Recap: Phoenix vs. Calgary

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Mike Smith made 29 saves for his third shutout of the season as the Phoenix Coyotes blanked the Calgary Flames, 4-0.

Antoine Vermette and Raffi Torres each registered a goal and an assist for the Coyotes, who improved to 6-2-1 in February.

"Tonight was a great win for our team, a great confidence builder," Smith said.

Danny Taylor, making his first NHL start, stopped 33 shots for Calgary, which has dropped four of its last six games.

"I think he would have liked to see the second goal (again), but at the same time, if you don't score goals, you can't even look at what the goalie did for you because you can't win if you don't score," Flames head coach Bob Hartley said of Taylor's first start.

Both of the Coyotes' first two tallies were scored in the opening minute of a period.

Keith Yandle lit the lamp 41 seconds after the game's opening faceoff. Phoenix did an excellent job cycling the puck in the Calgary zone and Yandle wound up burying the rebound of David Moss' shot.

After a scoreless middle frame, the Coyotes took a 2-0 lead just 30 seconds into the third period. Mikkel Boedker gathered a carom off the end boards and whipped a backhander that ricocheted off the inside of Taylor's right pad.

A scramble in the crease led to a goal by Vermette at the 9:27 mark.

Torres capped the scoring with 3:11 to play.

Game Notes

Smith recorded his 22nd career shutout ... Moss and Oliver Ekman-Larsson each had two assists ... Phoenix forward Radim Vrbata missed the game with a lower- body injury ... The teams split the season series last year, but the Flames claimed at least a point in all four contests (2-0-2).
