Recap: Buffalo vs. New Jersey

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Nathan Gerbe scored the only goal in the second round of the shootout to give the Buffalo Sabres a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

Ryan Miller made two spectacular saves in the shootout, stopping a Patrik Elias shot with his right pad before sealing the win with a glove save of Travis Zajac's shot in the final round. Miller finished with 37 saves in the win.

Patrick Kaleta and Steve Ott also tallied for the Sabres.

"We survived and got two points. Not pretty, but it's two," Miller said. "When you win hockey games, there's a certain belief. And we're just trying to do it one game at a time."

Steve Sullivan and Mark Fayne scored one goal apiece for the Devils, who trail the New York Islanders and New York Rangers by two points for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Martin Brodeur made 24 saves in the setback.

"It's really concerning that we can't just win. That's the bottom line," Brodeur said. "We played one of the teams that we should beat, and I thought we deserved to beat them the way we played."

Kaleta tipped in Jochen Hecht's shot to five the Sabres a 1-0 lead with 15:38 left in the first. Kaleta broke for the net from the right corner and redirected the puck past Brodeur.

Sullivan's power play goal with 1:40 left tied the game at 1-1. Steve Bernier corralled a loose puck behind the net and found Sullivan on the doorstep for his sixth goal of the season.

Ott's goal with 6:16 left in the middle session gave the Sabres a 2-1 edge, but Fayne netted the shorthanded equalizer 5:46 into the final period to tie the game. It was Fayne's first tally of the season.

With the Buffalo victory, the Pittsburgh Penguins clinched a playoff berth in upcoming the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

Game Notes

The Sabres will visit the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday ... The Devils are 6-4-10 in one-goal games this season and 1-10 in shootouts ... New Jersey will host the Boston Bruins on Wednesday.
