Recap: Ottawa vs. Montreal

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Peter Regin's goal in the fifth round of the shootout and Ben Bishop's 44-save effort lifted the Ottawa Senators over the Montreal Canadiens, 2-1, in a Northeast Division battle.

Dave Dziurzynski scored in regulation for the Senators, who have won five in a row.

Bishop started his second straight game in net for an injured Craig Anderson, who is out with a sprained right ankle suffered last Thursday against the New York Rangers.

"Bishop to King-3, Checkmate," Ottawa coach Paul MacLean said with a smile. "It was all Ben Bishop tonight."

Ottawa, which improved to 9-1-2 as the host this season, now sits one point behind Montreal in the division standings.

Andrei Markov scored the lone goal for the Canadiens, who have recorded a point in eight straight games, going 6-0-2 in those contests.

Carey Price stopped 23-of-24 shots in defeat.

"The result was not in our sight," Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. "Bishop was outstanding. I liked the way we played. We competed, we played hard. We were aggressive on the puck. We had traffic; we hit (three) posts. For me, it always about how we're going to play, and I believe we played a good hockey game."

The Canadiens outshot the Senators by a 12-5 margin during a scoreless first period.

Ottawa broke the scoreless tie at the 6:49 mark of the middle stanza, when Dziurzynski's slap shot from the top of the left circle sailed past Price.

Montreal tied the game on its 30th shot of the contest, which came with 3.8 seconds remaining in the second period on Markov's slap shot from the point that got past Bishop.

The Canadiens held a 30-15 advantage in shots over the first two frames.

Montreal went on the power play with 1:39 remaining in the third period, when Marc Methot went to the box for interference. Less than a minute later, Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban was sent off for tripping, however.

Ottawa went on the power play briefly in the early stages of overtime. The Senators' first power play of the game came to an end 53 seconds into the extra session, when Kyle Turris was called for hooking.

Regin hit the post in the final seconds of overtime, sending the game to the shootout.

Senators forward Jakob Silfverberg scored in the first round of the shootout, but David Desharnais tied things in the next round. It remained even until the fifth round, which started with Regin's goal. Bishop then stopped Tomas Plekanec to give Ottawa the victory.
