Recap: Ottawa vs. Dallas

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Jamie Benn scored in the second round of the shootout to lift the Dallas Stars over the Ottawa Senators, 4-3, on Sunday.

Ray Whitney, Valeri Nichushkin and Antoine Roussel scored in regulation for the Stars, who snapped a two-game skid. Kari Lehtonen stopped 33-of-36 shots.

Erik Karlsson, Jason Spezza and Bobby Ryan each had a goal and an assist for the Senators, who have lost five in a row for the first time since March 30- April 9 of last season.

Craig Anderson made 33 saves before leaving the game on a stretcher in overtime. Robin Lehner made two saves in relief.

With Ottawa trailing 3-2, Ryan scored with 9.6 seconds left in regulation to tie the game. The forward jumped on a loose puck in the slot and beat Lehtonen with a snap shot.

Anderson left the game early in overtime after he was run over by Nichushkin. The team said after the game that the goaltender has a stiff neck and will receive further evaluation on Monday.

Lehner and Lehtonen each made two saves in overtime, with Lehtonen stopping all three Dallas skaters during the shootout.

"I thought we started the game good again tonight," Senators coach Paul MacLean said. "We made a couple of mistakes that ended up in our net, but I thought that, again, we dug in and found a way to get something out of a game. I thought, again, that's a great start for our team. Let's continue to dig in and continue to get something out of a game."

Whitney's slapper from the top of the right circle gave Dallas a 1-0 lead at the 17:03 mark of the first period.

Just 30 seconds into the second stanza, Nichushkin made it a 2-0 with his first NHL goal.

"We're going to have to learn how to win, and again, we made it tough on ourselves," Dallas coach Lindy Ruff said. "We're going to have to fix a few of those mistakes we made and get a greater understanding of when you're up 2-0 in a game what kind of opportunities you want to give up and how hard you want to try to score."

Karlsson put Ottawa on the board at the 7:41 mark. After the Senators successfully killed off Chris Neil's double minor, the defenseman scored on a 3-on-1.

Spezza's power-play goal at the 16:40 mark of the second period made it a 2-2 game. Kyle Turris' slap shot from the left circle hit off the end boards and bounced out front to Spezza, who scored his eighth goal of the season.

Dallas went back in front at the 3:11 mark of the third period when Ottawa defenseman Mark Borowiecki put the puck past Anderson into his own net. Roussel got credit for the goal.
