Recap: Anaheim vs. Calgary

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Teemu Selanne scored what proved to be the game-winner late in the second period, as the Anaheim Ducks handed the Calgary Flames their first regulation loss of the season with a 3-2 decision on Wednesday at Honda Center.

Kyle Palmieri and Dustin Penner potted a goal apiece for the Ducks, who have won 17 straight regular-season home games against the Flames.

Viktor Fasth stood tall between the pipes for Anaheim, turning away 33-of-35 shots in the triumph.

Lee Stempniak and Jiri Hudler each scored once for the Flames, who fell to 3-1-2 after failing to register a point for the first time this season.

Joey MacDonald allowed all three goals on 22 shots in defeat.

Selanne's first goal of the season staked Anaheim to a 3-1 lead late in the second following a Calgary turnover in the neutral zone.

Jakob Silfverberg won a race to the loose puck near the Flames' blue line and tipped the disc ahead to spring Selanne on a breakaway, which the veteran winger finished with a quick wrister from between the circles for a 3-1 lead with 3:25 left in the second.

"It was a race between me and their other defenseman," Silfverberg said of the play that set up Selanne's goal. "I got to it before him, and I saw Selanne in the middle, and I just tried to get the puck in there. He made a nice shot."

After having a goal waived off for a high stick under a minute after Selanne's goal, Calgary cut into the margin early in the third when Kris Russell flipped a shot on net from the left point that deflected off the stick of Hudler in front and sailed past Fasth to make it 3-2 just 4:15 into the final frame.

Fasth, who finished the final period with 16 saves, made a pair of big pad stops to kill off a Daniel Winnik hooking minor at the 8:43 mark and turned away all comers the rest of the way to keep the Ducks in front.

"A couple of individual mistakes but at the same time, you can't fault the effort," Calgary head coach Bob Hartley said. "We battled back but you know, we dug ourselves a big hole and we couldn't come out of it."

Penner opened the scoring just 3:27 in, as Ryan Getzlaf slid a cross-ice feed from just outside the right circle toward the far post, where a charging Penner pounded in a one-timer for a 1-0 lead.

The Ducks doubled their lead later in the frame when Palmieri picked off Chris Butler's clearing attempt near the Calgary blue line and made his way into the slot before rifling a shot through the legs of a Calgary defenseman and past the stick-side of MacDonald to make it 2-0 at 13:04.

Calgary's Tim Jackman was given a five-minute major and a game-misconduct just under two minutes later after striking Anaheim's Sami Vatanen with the butt- end of his stick.

However, with Anaheim working in the offensive zone on the ensuing man- advantage, Palmieri couldn't corral a bouncing puck at the Calgary blue line, allowing Stempniak to spring free on a breakaway.

The Calgary winger was able to cash in on the short-handed chance, as he snuck a point-blank shot through the pads of Fasth to make it 2-1 with 3:29 left in the first period.

In 2013, the Montana State Bobcats made a bit of an offensive switch, going from a pass-heavy system to a more run- integrated style of play. The reason wasn't because the team was unstable at quarterback, but rather due to the fact the Bobcats were loaded at the running back position.
