Recap: Carolina vs. NY Islanders

Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Peters stopped all 21 shots he faced in net to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders at PNC Arena.

Peters earned his first shutout and second win of the season since taking the place of injured starter Cam Ward.

The lone goal of the game came early in the first period, when Ron Hainsey took a shot from the point that Radek Dvorak deflected past Kevin Poulin.

Carolina has now beaten the Islanders in five straight meetings.

Poulin stopped 23-of-24 shots for New York, which has lost two in a row.

"He made the saves that he had to for us and gave us a chance. That is nice to see from my young goaltender," said Islanders head coach Jack Capuano.

Dvorak re-directed a Hainsey shot to score the lone goal of the game 6:39 into the first period. Hainsey stopped a clearing attempt by the Islanders to keep the puck in the zone and had enough time to get the shot off that Dvorak deflected past Poulin.

"Any time you get the lead in the first, it is a little bit easier. It was a hard game, very up and down for 60 minutes. We came away with two points," said Dvorak.

After an unsuccessful power play for both teams and some pretty saves by each goalie, the score remained 1-0 Hurricanes after the first.

The second period was highlighted by more good goaltending and lots of physical play. Poulin stopped all 11 shots he faced in the period and Peters stopped all seven shots he saw.

Each team had a couple penalties during the second stanza. The Islanders' Kyle Okposo and Carolina's Brett Bellemore each earned a roughing penalty for a scuffle. Bellemore also received a fighting major earlier in the period when he squared off with New York's Matt Martin.

Following the scrappy second period, the third began with the same kind of play. The score remained 1-0 halfway into the frame and the physical play was still present.

Each team had their fair share of chances with time winding down, but the goaltenders dictated the game by coming up big when their teams needed them to.

The pace of play picked up late in the third, but so did the play of the goalies. The teams traded odd-man rushes back and forth, but all amounted to nothing.

Game Notes
