Recap: Minnesota vs. Toronto

St. Paul, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Zach Parise and Jason Pominville both scored in the shootout to lift the Minnesota Wild over the Toronto Maple Leafs, 2-1, at Xcel Energy Center.

After Parise lit the lamp as Minnesota's first shooter, Josh Harding stopped Mason Raymond and Phil Kessel before Pominville fired a wrister through the five-hole of Jonathan Bernier for the win.

"We beat a really good team," Wild head coach Mike Yeo said. "I love the way our guys competed."

Parise scored the Wild's only goal in regulation, with the assists coming from Mikko Koivu and Charlie Coyle. Harding made 19 saves on 20 shots after entering the game in relief of an injured Niklas Backstrom.

Toronto's Nazem Kadri crashed the net and made contact to the head of a defenseless Backstrom. The Minnesota netminder laid motionless on the ice for a few seconds before getting up and staying in the game for a few more minutes. The Wild announced after the game Backstrom is suffering from an upper-body injury.

Raymond tallied his sixth of the season on the power play in the second period, while Bernier stopped 33-of-34 shots in the defeat.

After a failed Minnesota clear, Jake Gardiner gloved down the puck at the blue line and located Kadri. Kadri dished the puck to Morgan Rielly, who fired a shot on net. Raymond quickly buried the rebound for a power-play goal to give Toronto a 1-0 lead 7:32 into the second.

Kadri caused more trouble later in the game, receiving a five-minute match penalty for an illegal hit to the head on Mikael Granlund close to the midway point of the third. Kadri threw a high hit along the boards, which sent the back of Granlund's head violently into the glass.

"(Kadri) made initial contact with the shoulder and (Granlund) had his head down. He didn't have his arms up, he ran into the player. Granlund snapped his head back and obviously, the referee saw it differently," Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle said.

Minnesota could not capitalize on the extended man advantage, only mustering two shots on net.

The Wild tied the game with 4:17 remaining in the third. After Kessel turned the puck over in his zone, Coyle threw the puck to the front of the net. The puck ricocheted off Parise's skate and Kessel's skate before finding the back of the net.

The late goal sent the game into overtime.

Harding stoned Rielly with 29 seconds remaining in overtime. Rielly tipped the puck in on net, but Harding knocked the puck down with his glove and smothered it to force the game into a shootout.

Game Notes

Minnesota has won four straight home games ... The game marked Minnesota's 500th NHL game at Xcel Energy Center ... Kessel played in his 300th game as a Maple Leaf ... Toronto went 1-for-3 on the power play.
