Recap: Chicago vs. Ottawa

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonathan Toews posted two goals in the third period to notch his third career hat trick as the Chicago Blackhawks survived for a 6-5 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

Andrew Shaw scored twice while Marian Hossa had a goal and two assists for the Blackhawks, who have won two straight and four of six.

Nikolai Khabibulin started in net but was pulled in the second period after giving up four goals on 22 shots. Corey Crawford spent the rest of the time in the net and allowed just one goal on 15 shots to get the win.

Kyle Turris and Milan Michalek each posted a goal and an assist for the Senators, who have lost their past three games. Craig Anderson allowed all six goals on 40 shots in the loss.

"We got five goals on the road against the Stanley Cup champions," said Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean. "But once they changed the goalie they seemed to have new life and really start pressured us. We gave them some easy goals that we should have made them work harder for."

Toews tied the game just 1:20 into the third as Johnny Oduya skated down the right wing and pulled up at the right circle before firing a pass to the front where Toews redirected it in.

Toews then capped the hat trick and gave the Blackhawks a 5-4 lead as he finished off a nice passing play by tapping in the rebound of a Brent Seabrook shot from the slot at 9:13.

Shaw padded Chicago's lead at 14:10 of the third as he jammed the puck in from the low right side for his second of the game and third of the year.

The goal proved fortunate as Ottawa got one back just 13 seconds later when Zack Smith's wrister from the top of the left circle beat Crawford high.

Ottawa, though, was unable to net the tying goal despite several chances with the goalie pulled in the final minute.

"Guys just don't give up in this clubhouse," said Toews. "There's been a bunch of times since I've been here that we've come back in the third period being down a goal or whatever. You want to finish the job and this team we have can do that."

Shaw got his first goal of the game at 6:54 of the opening period off a tip during a power play, but Michalek scored with one minute left in the frame to tie the contest heading to the second.

Turris and Hossa exchanged goals 50 seconds apart at 6:51 and 7:41 of the second period, while Joe Corvo scored at 10:19 and Mika Zibanejad lit the lamp less than a minute later to give Ottawa a 4-2 advantage.

Toews' first of the game came at 14:30 of the second period to make it a 4-3 game heading to the third.

Game Notes

Ottawa hosts the Islanders on Friday ... Chicago plays in Winnipeg on Saturday ... The Blackhawks have taken three straight against the Senators ... Ottawa scored on its only power play of the game, while Chicago was 1-for-2 ... Clarke MacArthur had two assists for Ottawa, while Patrick Sharp had two helpers for Chicago.
