Recap: Buffalo vs. Edmonton

Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Hendricks scored the winner in the third period as the Edmonton Oilers took a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday.

Jeff Petry and Justin Schultz also scored for the Oilers, who have won four of their last five games. Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 42 shots in the win.

"He played great because we put him behind the eight ball a lot with all the penalties we took and shots we gave up," said Schultz of Bryzgalov. "He really came up big several times tonight."

Steve Ott and Drew Stafford scored for the Sabres, who have lost seven straight games at home. Jhonas Enroth turned away 25 shots in defeat.

With the score tied in the third period, Edmonton went up while shorthanded, as Boyd Gordon got a lead pass through the middle to Hendricks, who sticked the puck back and forth before flicking in a wrister just 57 seconds in.

From there it was all Bryzgalov as he stopped 13 shots in the third period, including a big glove save on a slap shot from Alexander Sulzer with 36 seconds to play and the Buffalo net empty for an extra attacker.

The Oilers scored just 32 seconds in as Petry scored from the slot on a backhand for his fourth goal of the year.

Buffalo got the goal back, though, on the power play at 8:04 of the first as Tyler Myers' shot from the right circle was stopped, but Ott was able to just get the rebound over the goalline before it was swept away.

Skating shorthanded, the Sabres took a 2-1 lead just inside the final minute of the first period as Stafford skated in down the right wing and wristed a shot past Bryzgalov's glove.

"I thought Drew, the way he shot that puck, that's what we want to see," said Buffalo interim coach Ted Nolan said. "He's a big power forward and he's starting to get his confidence back."

Edmonton tied the game at 16:45 of the second period on a rush play that saw David Perron sent a pass from the slot to the right circle where Schultz wristed it into the left corner.
