Recap: Vancouver vs. NY Rangers

Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Henrik Lundqvist stopped 34 shots and Martin St. Louis finally scored with his new team as the New York Rangers defeated the Vancouver Canucks, 3-1, on Tuesday.

Daniel Carcillo and Benoit Pouliot also scored for the Rangers, who have won seven of eight and now hold a three-point lead over the Flyers for second place in the Metropolitan Division.

"I just feel that this group here, the type of players we have, they're willing to do everything it takes to win games," said New York head coach Alain Vigneault.

Ryan Kesler had the only goal of the game for the Canucks, who have dropped their past three games. Eddie Lack gave up all three goals on 31 shots.

"I thought our team played hard and we had some chances that we just didn't finish," said Vancouver head coach John Tortorella. "I thought we battled real hard and it was a good game."

Vigneault and Tortorella had switched cities in the offseason, and Vigneault's squad has gotten the better of Tortorella's bunch, as the Rangers had taken a 5-2 decision over Vancouver in New York on Nov. 30.

New York scored just 4:59 into the game as a scrum in front saw Carcillo eventually jam it in for his fourth of the season.

The Rangers made it a 2-0 game at 14:43 of the first on the power play after a rebound went to the left circle where Derick Brassard fired it over to the right and Pouliot snapped it in.

Vancouver cut its deficit to 2-1 at 6:21 of the second as a right circle faceoff win by Kesler saw Daniel Sedin get the puck, passing it over to the slot where Kesler one-timed it home.

Acquired on March 5 from the Lightning, St. Louis had gone 14 games without a goal, but that streak came to an end halfway through the third with his team shorthanded.

The puck came out of the New York end as Rick Nash picked up the puck and skated down the left wing on a 2-on-1. Nash sent the puck over to the right and St. Louis roofed it in for his 30th goal of the season and a 3-1 lead.

Game Notes

New York plays in Colorado on Thursday ... Vancouver hosts Los Angeles on Saturday ... New York has won four straight against Vancouver ... New York was 1-for-3 on the power play and Vancouver went 0-for-2.

There was quite a bit of hitting on the field at Milan Puskar Stadium last weekend, but almost as much action took place in the streets just outside in the hours following West Virginia's upset of visiting Baylor.
