Recap: Boston vs. Detroit

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Milan Lucic and Jarome Iginla registered third-period goals and Tuukka Rask stopped 31 shots, as the Boston Bruins advanced courtesy of a 4-2 decision over the Detroit Red Wings in Game 5 of this Eastern Conference quarterfinal from TD Garden.

Loui Eriksson and Zdeno Chara also tallied, with Torey Krug adding a pair of assists for the Bruins, who won the series 4-1 and face the rival Montreal Canadiens in the next round at a date to be determined.

"That series was a lot tougher than maybe the results showed; Detroit is a really good team with a great system and great players," Chara said in praise of his opponents for the last eight days.

Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg provided offense for the Red Wings, who failed to win a playoff series for the second time in three seasons.

Jonas Gustavsson, making his second start in place of the ill Jimmy Howard, made 29 saves in the season-ending setback.

The contest turned in the hosts' favor after Johan Franzen and Brendan Smith were sent off for separate infractions 22 seconds apart inside the final minute of the second period. During a 4-on-3 advantage Chara's right-point blast sailed over Gustavsson's glove with 3.8 seconds showing to make it 2-1 for the Bruins.

Lucic extended the B's edge to 3-1 just before the 4 1/2-minute mark of the third. Franzen failed to clear the puck properly and his cross-ice attempt found the stick of Krug, who was allowed space on the left wing to slip a centering feed to the burly goal scorer.

Zetterberg pulled his team within a goal, cleaning up a Justin Abdelkader rebound from a sharp angle at the left side as the clock ticked down below four minutes left in regulation.

A bench minor committed by Detroit placed the visitors down a man with 3:04 to play and put a damper on its comeback hopes, which were ultimately dashed on Iginla's empty-net score with 16 seconds to play.

"You want to be the best you can be, I didn't think we were, but (this experience has been) real good for our kids. They found out how hard it is," stated Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock. "We gotta have a big summer. We gotta get healthy and we gotta get in shape."

Boston recorded the game's first goal on the game's initial power play, as Dougie Hamilton carried up the right wing and dished to a crossing Eriksson, who deposited his backhander from the right side at the 3:27 mark.

Only 12 seconds into a Lucic high-sticking minor, the Red Wings knotted the contest. Zetterberg sent a fluttering shot from the point, which caromed off Rask and right to Datsyuk for his third of the series at 14:41 of the second period.

"We had to play really well to beat this team. We really had to earn our wins," said Bruins head coach Claude Julien. "We'll enjoy the win today, and the series win, and we'll regroup."
