Recap: Carolina vs. Buffalo
Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Zemgus Girgensons beat Cam Ward with a backhand in the eighth round of the shootout to give the Buffalo Sabres a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
After Buffalo's Matt Moulson and Carolina's Chris Terry were successful on tries early in the shootout, 12 straight shots were either turned away or off the mark before Girgensons delivered the game-winner.
"This game was about finding something deep down inside the heart, a will to win," said Girgensons.
Marcus Foligno tallied twice in regulation for Buffalo, which finally got a win after three straight defeats to open the season. Torrey Mitchell also scored for the Sabres, who got 22 saves from Jhonas Enroth.
Carolina, meanwhile, fell to 0-2-1 on the season despite a goal and an assist apiece from Terry, Zach Boychuk and Riley Nash. Ward made 23 saves on 26 shots.
Buffalo led 2-1 through two periods and built a two-goal cushion early in the third, when Foligno slipped past two defenders and fired a wrister past Ward's blocker.
The margin held until the 12:11 mark. Off a face-off in the Buffalo zone, Boychuk won the puck in the corner and slipped in front of the net to Terry, who easily tapped it home.
"We were down two with under 10 (minutes) to go. You're not going to get many points in this league down two with 10 to go," said Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters. "I liked the effort, I liked the fact that we stayed with it, I liked our third period."
Terry returned the favor with 1:48 left, feeding Boychuk for the game-tying goal. A video review confirmed the goal.
Earlier, Chris Stewart led a 2-on-1 and dropped off a pass for Foligno, who opened the scoring with the first period's only goal.
Both teams tallied once in the second, with Nash tying the score 30 seconds in and Mitchell countering less than two minutes later to restore the Buffalo lead.Game Notes
