Recap: San Jose vs. Carolina

San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrej Sekera and Elias Lindholm each had a goal and an assist to lead the Carolina Hurricanes in a 5-4 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.

Eric Staal, Andrej Nestrasil and Victor Rask all scored for the Hurricanes, who have won their past two. Justin Faulk had three assists and Cam Ward allowed four goals on 27 shots.

Tomas Hertl had two goals and an assist, Patrick Marleau added a goal and an assist and Logan Couture scored for the Sharks, who have lost three of their last four. Antti Niemi gave up four goals on 29 shots.

"We weren't very sharp in the first two (periods), but came alive in the third," said Couture.

San Jose trailed 3-1 entering the third, but tied the game on a pair of quick goals, the first of which came at 2:27 as Hertl tipped a shot on net then whacked his own rebound in out of the air.

Just 1:22 later, Couture's turnaround wrister from the right circle zipped into the net to tie the game.

Carolina, though, took the lead back with 4:51 to play as Sekera skated in down the left wing and sent a shot on net that saw the rebound hit off the skate of San Jose's Brenden Dillon and go in for a 4-3 edge.

San Jose pulled Niemi for an extra attacker and Rask put the puck into the empty net with 1:10 to play.

The Sharks, though, made it a one-goal game again with 54.3 seconds to play as Marleau worked the puck out of the left boards and snapped it in for his 11th goal of the year.

They were unable to get the equalizer, though, as Carolina closed out a four- game road trip with a mark of 2-1-1.

The Hurricanes scored with 58 seconds left in the first period as Jiri Tlusty's shot from the right point came off the back boards and set at the right of the net where Staal swiped it in before Niemi could get a glove on it.

Carolina took a 2-0 lead at 5:33 of the second when Alexander Semin skated the puck in at the right point at sent a backhand pass to Nestrasil, who snapped in a wrister for his second of the season.

San Jose got on the board three minutes later as Chris Tierney slipped a backhand pass from his knees behind the net to the front where Hertl snapped it in.

Carolina, though, got it back at 10:13 on the power play on Lindholm's shot from the right point through a screen.

Game Notes

Carolina hosts Anaheim on Thursday ... San Jose hosts Calgary on Monday ... Carolina was 1-for-4 on the power play, while San Jose failed to score on its one man advantage ... Tierney had two assists.
