Recap: Washington vs. Winnipeg

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Nicklas Backstrom had two goals and one assist in the Washington Capitals' 5-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.

Alex Ovechkin and Troy Brouwer added one goal and one assist apiece for the Capitals, who have won three in a row. John Carlson also lit the lamp.

"Right now, in this kind of moment of the season, you look at different teams and you just have to play to get points," said Ovechkin. "Every point right now is a very important point and we have to show the best game. All the guys have to sacrifice their body and play well."

Braden Holtby made 19 saves for Washington, which has won seven straight against Winnipeg.

Toby Enstrom scored the lone goal for the Jets, who had their two-game winning streak snapped. Ondrej Pavelec stopped 28-of-32 shots.

Carlson scored on the power play at the 14:10 mark of the first period. His shot from the point beat traffic in front and got past Pavelec.

Ovechkin made it 2-0 at 18:35 when he snapped a shot past Pavelec from the lower left circle. It was his 38th goal of the season.

The Jets got within one at 11:17 of the middle stanza. Enstrom's shot from the top of the right circle deflected off Washington defenseman Karl Alzner and floated past Holtby.

With Blake Wheeler off for tripping, Backstrom fired a shot from the top of the right circle that snuck past Pavelec at 13:07.

Backstrom scored Washington's third power-play goal of the game at 15:47. He completed a 4-on-1 rush by beating Pavelec from the slot.

"[Washington] is the second best power play team in the NHL, so you can't really give them that many opportunities, especially five-on-threes," said Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba. "Any team is going to make it hurt. Myself included, we've got to stay out of the penalty box."

Brouwer added an empty-net goal with 6:27 remaining in regulation.
