Recap: Colorado vs. Edmonton

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - For the second time in less than a week, the lowly Edmonton Oilers delivered a huge blow to the Colorado Avalanche's playoff hopes.

Richard Bachman made 29 saves, Andrew Miller collected three assists and the Oilers posted a 4-1 win over the Avalanche at Pepsi Center.

"We're starting to understand that if we play the game the right way for 60 minutes we'll have success," Oilers interim coach Todd Nelson said.

Ryan O'Reilly scored a goal to extend his point streak to a career-high eight games, but the Avalanche were unable to close the gap on Winnipeg for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. They remain eight points back of the idle Jets with six games remaining.

Semyon Varlamov stopped 32 shots for Colorado, which lost 4-3 at Edmonton last Wednesday.

"I'm going to push... and I like to think the players will do the same," Avs coach Patrick Roy said.

Brandon Davidson opened the scoring with his first career NHL goal. The defenseman pinched in from the point and one-timed Anton Lander's cross-ice pass behind Varlamov 4:49 into the game.

The Avalanche tied it at 13:18 of the first period. Bachman kicked out a shot by Alex Tanguay, but O'Reilly was on the doorstep to bang home the rebound.

Justin Schultz gave Edmonton a 2-1 lead with 4:32 remaining in the second period. Teddy Purcell flipped the puck from behind the Oilers net and it skipped through the neutral zone and across the Colorado blueline. Schultz raced into the Avalanche zone, lifted the stick of Nate Guenin and backhanded the puck past Varlamov.

Nikita Nikitin and Taylor Hall each scored empty-net goals 32 seconds apart late in the third period.

Game Notes

The Oilers snapped a five-game road losing streak ... O'Reilly, the NHL's third star of the week, has five goals and eight assists over his last eight games.
