Recap: Florida vs. Pittsburgh

Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Aleksander Barkov provided the lone goal of a seven-round shootout as Florida claimed a 4-3 decision over Pittsburgh in the back end of a home-and-home set.

After Simon Despres had his chance deflected away by Roberto Luongo to open the final round, Barkov faked a move from forehand-to-backhand up the middle and casually flipped a shot past Marc-Andre Fleury which ended the game.

Jimmy Hayes scored twice in regulation and Jussi Jokinen once for the Panthers, while Luongo came up with 24 saves.

"We've been beating some good teams here," Hayes said. "We have to continue to put pucks in the net."

Florida has endured four shootouts lasting a total of 35 rounds in its last six contests.

Patric Hornqvist, Nick Spaling and Evgeni Malkin lit the lamp for the Penguins, and Fleury stopped 34 shots.

The Pens announced earlier in the day that forwards Brandon Sutter and Steve Downie, along with goaltender Thomas Greiss, were sent back to Pittsburgh to be tested for mumps. Sidney Crosby, Beau Bennett and Olli Maatta have all previously tested positive, though Crosby is back in the lineup.

"We didn't get a lot of shots through," Crosby said.

Hornqvist opened the scoring 4:39 after the initial puck drop when he redirected a Despres point shot while standing to Luongo's left.

Jokinen evened things for the hosts with 36.4 seconds to play in the second, and Florida pushed across two more in the third for what seemed like a safe advantage.

Hayes beat Fleury after only 22 seconds elapsed on a sharp-angle shot from the right wing, then provided the Panthers a 3-1 edge at 4:55 by chopping in a Sean Bergenheim rebound at the right post.

A power-play marker from Spaling inside of five minutes to play pulled Pittsburgh to a goal before Malkin's conversion of his second rebound try from inside the crease forged a 3-3 deadlock with 3:10 showing.
