Recap: Colorado vs. Nashville

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Joey Hishon's first career NHL goal proved to be the game-winner as the Colorado Avalanche edged the Nashville Predators 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Hishon, a 2010 first-round pick whose career was interrupted because of concussions, broke a 2-2 tie at 7:06 of the third period, beating Nashville's Pekka Rinne on the blocker side with a wrist shot from the high slot.

"I was fortunate to get the shot off, and I'm glad it went in," Hishon said.

Jarome Iginla and Ryan O'Reilly scored nine seconds apart in the second period for the Avalanche, who got 40 saves from Semyon Varlamov.

Rinne stopped 20 shots for Nashville, which has lost four straight and wasted an opportunity to reclaim first place in the Central Division. The Predators remain a point behind the St. Louis Blues, who lost to Winnipeg at home earlier Tuesday.

"Our goal is to play the best hockey right now and we are not," said Nashville defenseman Shea Weber. "We have to limit the turnovers and we just haven't done it."

The Predators were a bit unlucky on Colorado's first goal. Defenseman Mattias Ekholm fell and lost the puck in the Nashville zone. Iginla then hammered a pass from Tyson Barrie over Rinne's left shoulder to tie it with 4:28 remaining in the second.

O'Reilly fired a slap shot from the slot past Rinne's blocker to give Colorado the lead.

Nashville had a power play carry over into the third period, and Ryan Ellis scored at the 1:20 mark.

Calle Jarnkrok scored the Predators' first goal off a pass from Matt Cullen 5:02 into the game.

Game Notes

Ellis played in his 200th career game ... The Predators were 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Avalanche were 0-for-2.
