Recap: Calgary vs. Toronto

Calgary, AB ( - Sean Monahan finished with two goals and an assist to lead the Calgary Flames in a 6-3 rout of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday.

Johnny Gaudreau and Jiri Hudler each posted a goal and two assists, while Drew Shore and Mikael Backlund also scored for the Flames, who have won five of their last six games. Jonas Hiller backed up his offense with 25 saves.

David Booth lit the lamp twice and Richard Panik also scored for the Maple Leafs, who saw James Reimer give up six goals on 28 shots in the club's fourth defeat in five outings.

Gaudreau opened the scoring 5:06 into the contest as he moved in from behind the net and tapped in the rebound of Hudler's shot from the side of the cage.

Two minutes later, Reimer stopped T.J. Brodie's point blast, but Shore was present in front to make sure the puck found twine for a 2-0 lead.

"They came out strong in the first period and I think that was the difference in the game for sure," Booth said.

Toronto cut the deficit in half on the power play 1:40 later as Panik tipped in Morgan Rielly's rising shot from the right circle

The Flames responded by doubling its lead with a pair of short-handed markers for a 4-1 score heading into the first intermission.

Backlund stripped a defender of the puck and wristed a shot on a 2-on-0 at 11:40 and Monahan finished off a breakaway by beating Reimer blocker side less than three minutes later.

Calgary picked up where it left off during the second as Monahan followed up a 2-on-1, accepted Hudler's drop pass and wristed a shot past Reimer's glove just 1:29 into the frame.

"It just shows how good our PK is," Gaudreau said.

Booth held off a defender behind the net and made it a 5-2 game on a wrap-around shot that trickled through Hiller's pads at 4:56. Hudler, however, restored the Flames' four-goal cushion with a deft redirection in front less than four minutes later.

Just 29 seconds into the third, Booth notched his second of the night on a wrist shot to account for the final score.
