Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - The Phoenix Coyotes have agreed to terms on a long-term contract extension with head coach Dave Tippett, the team announced Friday.

Tippett has guided the Coyotes to a 156-96-42 record and three playoff appearances over the past four seasons. He ranks second on the franchise's all-time wins list and his .602 points percentage is the highest of any head coach in franchise history.

"We are very pleased to agree to terms with Dave to a long-term contract extension," Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said. "Elite coaching is required to win on a consistent basis and Dave is one of the best at his job in today's game. His work ethic, attention to detail, communicative skills and patience make him an ideal fit with our group as we work to build a franchise capable of winning the Stanley Cup."

The Coyotes missed the playoffs this past season after going 42-27-13 in 2011-12, which included the franchise's first division championship and the club's first appearance in the Western Conference finals.

Phoenix went 21-18-9 during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season.

"I am thrilled to stay with the Coyotes," said Tippett. "Don has done a very good job of assembling a great staff and group of players here and I like the direction we are headed. We've started to build a strong foundation and we are both looking forward to continuing to build a winning team here in the Valley and taking the next step as a first class organization."

Tippett has been the bench boss in Phoenix since the 2009-10 season, when he took over for Wayne Gretzky. Prior to joining the Coyotes, the 51-year-old Tippett spent six seasons as head coach of the Dallas Stars, posting a record of 271-156-65.
