Boston, MA (Sports Network) - When Patrick Kane gave Chicago its first Stanley Cup title in 49 years thanks to his overtime goal in Game 6 against the Philadelphia Flyers in 2010, many thought he would take home the Conn Smythe trophy.

Turns out he had to wait a few more years to add that award to his mantle.

Kane became the fourth American to win the Conn Smythe as the playoff MVP on Monday as the Blackhawks took a thrilling 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins in Game 6.

"I think there's something about our core," said Kane. "Hopefully we can stay together a long time, because that's two Cups in four years, and we seem to only be getting better and better as players as time goes on here.

"It's unbelievable to be in this situation. It's just a great group, and it's going to be fun to celebrate with them."

While he didn't have any points in this game, he did lead the Blackhawks in the postseason with 19 points (9 goals, 10 assists), second only to Boston's David Krejci's 26 points.

Totaling just three goals and two assists in the finals, his two-goal effort in Game 5 helped the team to a 3-1 win and the series lead, setting up Monday's series-clincher that saw the team score two goals in 17 seconds late in the contest.

Kane's best effort of the postseason came in the Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Kings, who were the reigning Cup champions. In Game 5 of that series, he capped his hat trick and series victory with an overtime goal to send the Blackhawks to the Cup Finals again.

The first overall pick of the 2007 draft out of Buffalo, New York, Kane is the third American in a row to win the MVP. He joins goaltenders Jonathan Quick (2012) and Tim Thomas (2011), who won for the Kings and Bruins, respectively. The other American to win the trophy was former Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch, who helped the Rangers end a 54-year drought in 1994 to take the MVP.

A Calder winner in 2008 as the NHL's top rookie, Kane also won a silver medal with the American team at the 2010 Winter Olympic games in Vancouver.

Chicago captain Jonathan Toews grabbed the Conn Smythe award in 2010.
