New York, NY (Sports Network) - The National Hockey League handed down a two- game suspension to Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown on Wednesday.

Brown was given the ban for his actions during the second period of Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Minnesota, when he used an elbow to hit Wild forward Jason Pominville in the head while attempting to corral a puck along the boards.

There was no penalty called on the play, though.

"As Pominville arrives, Brown proactively tries to counter-hit him. However, he extends his elbow directly into Pominville's face, causing injury," according to NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan in a video explanation of the circumstances surrounding the suspension.

"Brown sees and feels the Minnesota player approaching. He is in control of this play and is timing his counter-hit. That part is legal. What isn't, is how Brown makes this contact. This was not an inadvertent elbow caused by Pominville's sudden movement."

Brown forfeits $34,324.32 in salary which automatically goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. The 28-year-old will miss his club's final two remaining regular-season games, tonight at Detroit and on Saturday at home against San Jose.

He will be eligible to return once Los Angeles, which has already locked up a playoff berth, begins the postseason next week.
