Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - The Buffalo Sabres rewarded long-time general manager Darcy Regier with a contract extension on Saturday.

The extension was announced just one day before Buffalo will open its shortened season Sunday at home against Philadelphia.

Regier, who has been the Buffalo GM since 1997, has guided the Sabres to the Eastern Conference finals four times, most recently in 2007. However, Buffalo has missed the playoffs in three of the past five seasons.

"Both sides are happy with the arrangement," Buffalo owner Terry Pegula said. "And we look forward to continuing to work with Darcy into the future."

Regier displayed his emotions about the announcement.

"I am very grateful and honored to be able to continue in this capacity working with this ownership," Regier said.
