Hendry tops Strange in playoff to capture NZ PGA Championship

Arrowtown, New Zealand (Sports Network) - Michael Hendry outlasted Scott Strange on the first playoff hole on Sunday to capture his second straight NZ PGA Championship.

Hendry fired a 5-under 67 at The Hills Golf Club during his final round to jump into a tie for the top spot with Scott Strange, who carded a 6-under 66 on Sunday to bring both players to 19-under 269 for the tournament.

After both failed to capitalize on a birdie attempt at the 18th to force the playoff, they started the 18th over again for the decisive hole, where Strange's second shot found its way into a bunker, while Hendry hit his safely onto the green.

Hendry then rolled in his birdie effort from about 10 feet to become the first repeat champion at this event since Frank Nobilo in 1986.

"You come into the week thinking this is my trophy, I'm not going to give it to anyone else," said Hendry. "I had that attitude all week, so to retain it is unbelievable."

Gareth Paddison (68) and Josh Geary (66) shared third place at minus-15, while third-round leader Rohan Blizard stumbled to a 1-over 73 to fall to a share of fifth place with Hao-tong Li (69) and Michael Tran (68) at 14-under.
