Last year, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods were paired together in the penultimate group and everyone expected the duo to battle for the title. Woods never got anything going and stumbled to a 3-over 75 to end nine shots back of his playing partner.
Mickelson flew out of the gate going 5-under par through the first six holes. He had jumped into the lead at that point and he wouldn't look back as he had the low round of the day by three shots.
The win for Mickelson was his 40th on the PGA Tour, and his fourth at this event. If he wins this event again, Mickelson would tie Mark O'Meara with most victories in tournament history.
Mickelson is also coming off a dominating win last week in Phoenix.
The pros are teamed with amateurs for the first three rounds. Among the notables celebs from the sports world you will see are Bill Belichick, Chris Berman, Matt Cain, Wayne Gretzky, Brian Kelly, Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo, while entertainers like Carson Daly, Andy Garcia, Kenny G, Huey Lewis, Bill Murray, Ray Romano and Darius Rucker are also competing.
Golf Channel will have coverage all four days. Their coverage on Saturday and Sunday will be early, before they hand off to CBS for the rest of the round.
The PGA Tour heads back to Southern California next week for the Northern Trust Open at Riviera. Bill Haas birdied the second extra hole to beat Mickelson and Keegan Bradley in a playoff last year.
JOBURG OPEN, Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club, Johannesburg, South Africa - Branden Grace kicked off a career year at this event last year. He closed with a 72, but it was enough to give him his first tour title.
Grace beat Jamie Elson by one stroke. He went on to win three more times last year to become the first player to earn his tour card at Q School, then win four times the following season.
The third and final rounds were completed on Sunday, which was the first day without a weather delay.
The only winner from this season in the field this week is Charl Schwartzel, who won the Alfred Dunhill Championship. That win was the first since he won The Masters in 2011. Schwartzel won this event in 2010 and 2011 and owns all the scoring records.
Golf Channel will have all four rounds.
The European Tour remains in South Africa next week for the Africa Open, where Louis Oosthuizen is the two-time defending champion. He set the tournament scoring record last year as he posted a total of 27-under 265.
ALLIANZ CHAMPIONSHIP, The Old Course at Broken Sound, Boca Raton, Florida - Corey Pavin earned his first Champions Tour title last year as he birdied the first playoff hole to beat Peter Senior.
Pavin and Senior both closed with 71s to end one ahead of Bernhard Langer and Michael Allen. Senior birdied the final hole of regulation to force the extra session.
Rocco Mediate will be making his Champions Tour debut, and will be playing his first event of the season.
Also making his first tour start will be Bart Bryant, who joins his brother Brad in the field. Bart played in seven tournaments last year after not playing any from 2010 through 2012. Bart has also played two PGA Tour events this year, with a share of 41st at the Sony Open being his best finish.
Golf Channel has coverage of all three rounds.
The Champions Tour remains in Florida next week for the ACE Group Classic, where Kenny Perry cruised to a 5-stroke win over Langer, the 2011 champ.
