Kuchar's final-round 70 was enough for him to take home the trophy as third- round leader Kevin Na stumbled to a 4-over 76, which dropped him into a tie for seventh.

Na's loss followed a trend in which the 54-hole leader has failed to hold on to the lead. The last 54-hole leader to win the Players Championship was Stephen Ames in 2006.

Na dropped out of the lead on the front nine last year, paving the way for Kuchar to move in front. Martin Laird joined Kuchar atop the leaderboard with a birdie at the 13th. Kuchar birdied the 12th and Laird bogeyed No. 14 to give Kuchar a 2-shot lead.

At the 16th, Kuchar hit a tremendous shot from a fairway bunker to the green. He 2-putted for par and cruised home from there as Laird fell three back with a bogey at the last. Kuchar 3-putted for bogey at 17 to trim his lead, but parred the last for the biggest win of his career so far.

Kuchar added another big victory earlier this year when he claimed the WGC - Accenture Match Play Championship. That was one of four top-10 finishes for Kuchar this season. Since 2010, Kuchar leads the PGA Tour with 33 top-10 finishes. Luke Donald is two behind him, while five players are nine top-10s further back.

The field this week includes everyone ranked in the top 30 in the world, as well as 46 of the top 50 from the updated rankings. Jamie Donaldson, world No. 35, is the highest ranked player not competing this week.

Golf Channel has extensive coverage the first two days and early on the weekend before handing off to NBC for Saturday's and Sunday's afternoon coverage.

The PGA Tour returns to Texas for the next two weeks. First up is the HP Byron Nelson Championship, where Jason Dufner birdied the final hole last year to claim his second PGA Tour title in four weeks.
