Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Landon Donovan will remain with the Los Angeles Galaxy for the foreseeable future after signing a new multi-year contract extension with the club on Wednesday.

Donovan, 31, contemplated retirement prior to the start of the 2013 season, but those thoughts were officially put to rest when he put pen to paper on the contract that will likely see him finish his illustrious career in Major League Soccer.

"I'm thrilled to continue my career here with the LA Galaxy," Donovan said in a statement. "This organization has always treated me with the utmost respect and I feel truly blessed that I am able to continue playing here. The opportunity to play with the team I love and work to win championships, in front of wonderful fans while also being close to my family is literally a dream come true."

Donovan originally joined MLS on loan from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen way back in 2001 with the San Jose Earthquakes, where he won two MLS Cups over four seasons before joining the Galaxy in 2004, leading the club to three championships.

Over 13 seasons in MLS, Donovan has amassed 131 goals and 115 assists over 297 games played. He has also racked up 36 game-winning goals. His 131 goals are just four behind Jeff Cunningham for the most in league history.

Donovan has also had an exceptional international career with the United States. He is aiming to make a fourth straight World Cup appearance next summer in Brazil and is the U.S. men's all-time leading goal scorer with 56 tallies over 151 appearances.

Last month in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Donovan reminded everyone of his importance to the side when he was named tournament MVP after the Americans took down Panama, 1-0, to claim their fifth Gold Cup title.

"We are pleased that Landon has re-signed with the Galaxy," Galaxy head coach and general manager Bruce Arena said in a statement. "He is the best player in the history of the game in our country. This signing is instrumental toward our commitment to build a team that can compete for championships year-in and year-out. We look forward to Landon's continued leadership and excellent play as a member of the LA Galaxy."

"Few players have meant more to this league and this club than Landon Donovan,"Galaxy president Chris Klein added. "Landon has been a major factor in the growth and sustainability of Major League Soccer and we're thrilled that he will continue to wear a Galaxy shirt for years to come. Keeping Landon was a major focus for our club and reinforces our desire to acquire and retain the best players from the United States and abroad as we strive to be the premier club in North America."

With a new contract en-tow, Donovan will take to the pitch on Saturday hoping to lead the second-place Galaxy to a victory against the intrastate rival Earthquakes.

Through 25 matches this term, the two-time defending champs have 40 points, five behind Real Salt Lake for the best mark in the league.
