Boston's Middlebrooks lands on DL

Boston, MA ( - Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks has landed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained calf.

Middlebrooks was diagnosed with a Grade 1 calf strain after having an MRI exam Sunday morning.

Red Sox manager John Farrell expects Middlebrooks to be back on field when he's first available to return. Middlebrooks suffered the injury prior to Saturday's game against the Brewers.

Middlebrooks is hitting .231 (3-for-13) with one homer in four games this year. He batted .227 with 18 doubles, 17 homers and 49 RBI in 94 games last season.

The Red Sox recalled utility infielder Brock Holt from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill the roster spot.
