Berea, OH ( - Those anticipating Johnny Manziel's first action in an NFL game setting will have to wait a little longer during Saturday's preseason opener, as Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine announced Wednesday that Brian Hoyer will start the team's matchup against the Detroit Lions.

The decision was expected, as Hoyer has taken the majority of first-team reps thus far in training camp and holds an experience edge on the rookie Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner and one of two first-round picks by the Browns in this past April's draft.

Pettine did tell reporters that it's possible that Manziel will see some time with the first-team offense in Saturday's game.

The first-year head coach has previously stated that he plans to have a No. 1 quarterback named by the Browns' third preseason game. Pettine has yet to determine or reveal if Manziel will start Cleveland's second preseason contest at Washington on Aug. 18.

Cleveland did win all three of Hoyer's starts under center last season. In the last of those outings, the sixth-year pro sustained a season-ending torn ACL against the Buffalo Bills in Week 5.
