Miami, FL ( - Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez underwent successful Tommy John surgery in Los Angeles on Friday, the team said.

The procedure to replace the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic.

Fernandez, who was last season's NL Rookie of the Year, went on the disabled list this week with a UCL tear and said having the surgery was the only way he could return to the game as the same player.

He was 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 51 2/3 innings this season but endured a rough outing in San Diego May 9, giving up six runs -- five earned -- in five innings and saw a noticeable decrease in velocity on his fastball towards the end of the start.

The 21-year-old Cuban went 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA and 187 strikeouts in 172 2/3 innings last season and was named NL Rookie of the Year.
