Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - On the same day they celebrated a third World Series title in 10 seasons with a lavish parade through the city, the Boston Red Sox declined the contract option on reliever Matt Thornton for the 2014 season.

The decision was not unexpected, as Thornton was left off Boston's roster for the entire postseason. The veteran lefty would have been due a $6 million salary in 2014, with the Red Sox instead opting for a $1 million buyout.

Thornton was acquired by Boston from the Chicago White Sox on July 12 and went 0-1 with a 3.52 earned run average over 20 appearances with the club. Over 60 games between the two teams, he posted an 0-4 record with a 3.74 ERA.

The 37-year-old owns a 3.53 ERA and 23 saves in 606 games over 10 major league seasons, most of which were spent with Chicago.
