Allentown, PA (Sports Network) - Catcher Brian Schneider has reportedly announced that he will retire following a 13-year career in the major leagues.

Schneider told the Allentown Morning Call of his plans on Tuesday. The 36- year-old is currently a free agent and had spent the past three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies.

A fifth-round draft choice of Montreal in 1995, Schneider broke into the majors with the Expos in 2000 and compiled a .247 average, 67 home runs and 387 RBI during his big-league tenure. In addition to the Phillies and Expos/Nationals, he spent two seasons with the New York Mets from 2008-09.

Schneider posted career bests of 12 homers and 49 RBI while starting 125 games for Montreal in 2004, then hit .268 with 10 homers and 44 RBI when the franchise moved to Washington the following year.

The left-handed hitter appeared in just 34 games for the Phillies last year, batting .225 with two homers before sustaining a season-ending hamstring injury in August.
