Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - The Phoenix Suns have named Lindsey Hunter as the interim head coach on Sunday.

Hunter takes over for Alvin Gentry, who left the team on Friday as the two sides agreed to part ways after a poor 13-28 start to the season and missing the playoffs the last two seasons.

Following a 17-year career in the NBA, Hunter joined the Bulls organization shortly after retiring as a player development assistant. He signed with Phoenix this past offseason as the player development coordinator.

During his time as a player, Hunter averaged 8.5 points and 2.7 assists in 937 games with Detroit, Milwaukee, the Lakers, Toronto and Chicago.

Phoenix next plays on Wednesday in Sacramento.
