Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will adhere to doctors orders and undergo season-ending surgery on his ailing right wrist.

Teixeira's wrist had not responded well to a cortisone shot given to alleviate inflammation, and a recent MRI confirmed that a tendon sheath originally injured back in March has not healed adequately. Team doctors recommended surgery following the discovery.

Teixeira met with the media earlier this afternoon to announce his decision. He told reporters the surgery requires 4-5 months of rest and rehabilitation, but said he expects to be 100 percent in six months.

The Yankees placed Teixeira on the 15-day disabled list on June 18 after he complained of continued discomfort. He played in just 15 games this season.

The switch-hitting slugger began the season on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a strained wrist tendon on March 6 while preparing for the World Baseball Classic. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list in May, then officially activated on May 31.

Teixeira combined for 135 homers and 425 RBI in his first four seasons with New York, but posted just a .151 batting average with three home runs and 12 RBI in 53 at-bats this season.
